Hospedería del Estudio, late 1980s.

There are two guiding principles for this arrangement. First, all the buildings deliberately turn their backs on an ocean defined as desconocido, i.e. unknown and unknowable.10 Unlike neighbouring developments they do not ‘view’ the sea. Secondly the significance of a ‘life-in-common’ is reflected in the absence of any truly ‘private’ space in the city. A new dwelling type has been developed whose name, hospedería, or ‘inn’, indicates the weight given by the group to the concept of hospitality. Built collectively following agreement of the whole community, these buildings are occupied but not owned by group members, and each family is expected to provide a welcome to guests who seek lodging. The houses also provide a setting for group celebration, ensuring that somewhere in each hospedería is a space large enough to stage a gathering of the entire community round a single table.
